Natural crystals are often prismatic. Color white or light gray. Structurally, laurionite is close to kotunnit, whose clear white or colorless crystals are found mainly in the voids of ancient lead-bearing dumps exposed to seawater on the coast at Lavrion in Greece. In these heaps laurionitis occurs with such characteristic minerals as paralaurionite, fidlerite and penfildite.
Diagnostic signs.
Kotunnit is soluble in hot water, from which glistening crystals fall out in the cold. When a solution of potassium dichromate is applied to the solution, a yellow precipitate appears. Particularly interesting is the noticeable radioactivity, which is found in samples from Vesuvius.
Origin.
Kotunnit is present mainly in the form of aggregates of crystals in modern fumaroles near the crater of Vesuvius. It is formed together with copper chlorides and tenorite. Rarely, it is found as a product of oxidation of galena in the open air in the presence of chlorides. Such cases are known in several places in Chile or not far from the sea coast (Cornwall Peninsula).
