This mineral is the final term in the isomorphic series from vonsenite (in which bivalent iron predominates over magnesium) to the ludwigite. It is usually found in the form of fibrous and radiant-fibrous masses with a gloss approaching silk, or in the form of needle crystals. The color is usually greenish-black or light-green (in those species where the iron is smaller).
Diagnostic signs.
Ludwigite is similar to fibrous tourmaline or to some pyroxenes and amphiboles.
Origin.
This mineral is unique; Is formed only in metamorphosed (on contacts with intrusions) dolomite rocks. Often they are transformed into skarns with magnetite, diopside and forsterite.
Place of Birth.
Ludwigite was discovered in the Banat (Romania) deposits; Xuan (Korea); At many deposits of magnetite in Sweden, such as Norberg; In the United States (Nevada, Idaho and Montana). In Italy, ludwigite and vonsenite are found in the Brosso deposit near Ivrea.
