Pectolite rarely forms small colorless triclinic crystals needle shape. Almost always it occurs in the form of rounded solid concretions (radiant or spherulitic addition) and aggregates of fibrous crystals. They are opaque or translucent. Coloration light gray with shades of green, sky-blue, sometimes brown. Coating insignificant impurities associated with the elements which may include iron or copper.
Gloss ranges from silky to the glass. It is associated with the effect of moving strips iridescent coloring, which is seen in the difference between a parallel-fiber structure. pectolite units are very fragile and delicate and have irregular fracture because of the good cleavage in two directions, which have separate crystals. Moderate strength.
Diagnostic features.
In some cases, the mineral shows the fluorescence property of yellow under UV light. When heated in the flame of a candle loses mineral water intensively, is deposited on the walls of the tubes.
Origin.
Pectolite together with the zeolites occurs in the interstices among the main species and much less - among metamorphic rocks rich in calcium.
Place of Birth.
Discovered in amounts sufficient for the development, in the provinces of Quebec and Ontario (Canada), in the states of Alaska, New York and New Jersey (USA), as well as in the Dominican Republic. In a small massive clusters present in Valdi Fassa (province of Trento) in some basalts of the province of Verona, as well as in the Austrian Tyrol and Scotland.
The use in jewelry.
Pectolite, along with jade is used for the manufacture of small figurines. From it also limits the scope, rings, flat hoops suspension. Especially prized iridescent pectolite.
