Diagnostic card.
(Mg, Fe) Al (Al Si 3 O 10 ) (OH) 8
Singonia monoclinic
Hardness 2-2,5
Specific weight 2.6-2.8
Cleavage is perfect
Green colour
Glitter glass, mother-of-pearl
Pennin, crystallizes in the form of flattened crystals of bluish-green color with pearlescent shine due to cleavage. The chemical composition is unstable; Magnesium oxide (MgO) 17-34.9%, ferrous oxide (FeO) 0.7-17.4%, iron oxide (Fe2O3) 0-5.7%, alumina (Al2O3) 13.8-21.3 %, Silicon dioxide (SiO2) 29.8-33.77%, water (H2O) 11.5-14.6%.
Instead of alumina, chromium oxide (Cr2O3) can be present, this kind of mineral is called komomeritom (named after the Russian mining engineer Kemmerer). Color onion-green, bottle green, greenish-black (kammererit - pink, purple).
Fracture. The leaves of the mineral are flexible, but not elastic. The shape of the crystals. Plate, tabular, barrel-shaped, often twinned. Crystal structure. Layered lattice. Class of symmetry. Prismatic - 2 / ton. Cleavage. Good in terms of basis (001). Aggregates. Scaly; Druses of small barrel-shaped crystals.
Diagnostic signs.
In the flame of a candle this mineral breaks up into leaves, not melting. In sulfuric acid decomposes. Pennin plates are flexible, but not elastic. Behavior in acids. In H2SO4, most of it dissolves.
Origin.
Pennin is widely distributed in nature. It occurs especially often in diabases, which are effusive rocks that are poor in silica, similar to gabbros.
Deposits and applications.
Fine pennin crystals were observed in crystalline schists in the Finelen glacier in Gorner Grath near the Zermatt mountain in Switzerland; Good crystals were found near the Zillertal in Tyrol (Austria), in Khardadinsk in the Urals.
