The crystals of this mineral are mostly violet-red or brown, but they are pink and even black. They are rarely transparent, more often translucent or opaque. Glitter from glass to wax. The shape of the crystals is usually columnar, elongated. Most often, the crystals of piemontite are imperfect; They are rarely isolated, they often form bundles and fibrous, as well as granular or massive clusters.
Diagnostic signs.
It easily melts in the flame of a candle, does not dissolve in acids.
Origin.
Since piemontite contains manganese, it can be found in manganese deposits, where it is formed as a result of metasomatism. It is also found in rocks of the gneiss type under the conditions of metamorphism of the middle and low stages.
Deposits and applications.
The main deposits are located in Japan, France, Sweden, California, New Zealand and in Belarus. In Italy, it can be found in Saint-Marcel (Val d'Aosta) and Chreze near Lanzo-Torinese (Piedmont region). Piemontite is used in jewelry for making intaglio and small plastic.
