Zeolites: Skolecite
Diagnostic card.
Ca Al 2 Si 3 O 10 * 3 H 2 O
Singonia monoclinic
Hardness 5
Specific weight 2.2
Cleavage is perfect
Fracture brittle, brittle
Color is colorless or white
Color in powder white
Glitter silky
Crystallized usually in the form of radiant aggregates consisting of the smallest silky fibers elongated parallel to the vertical crystallographic axis. Sometimes it is represented in the form of prismatic crystals, twinned so that a pseudohexagonal appearance is obtained. Can be colorless or light gray.
Diagnostic signs.
When heated, melts, folding into vermicular curved forms. Losing water, it passes into meta-cellite. Under the influence of hydrochloric acid, it dissolves readily, releasing jelly-like silica.
Origin.
The typical form of finding a scolecite is a void in the main effusives of the basaltic type. It is also observed in some metamorphosed limestones and, as a mineral of hydrothermal origin, in lithoclases of some metamorphic rocks.
Place of Birth.
In the form of beautiful crystals found in the voids of amygdaloid basalts on the islands of Mall and Skye in Scotland (Great Britain), on the island of Fair Yor in Iceland, in Pune in India and in Colorado (USA).
