Spessartin is named for the place of discovery - Spessart in Bavaria. There are deposits in Sri Lanka, Brazil, USA, Madagascar, Sweden.
It can occur in the form of massive irregular clusters with a strongly eroded surface or in the form of well-formed small rhombohedral or tetragonal-trioctahedral crystals; They have a glassy, sometimes resinous luster, there is no cleavage. The color varies from pale orange and orange-red to intensely brown, associated with the presence of manganese and iron.
Origin.
Spessartine is formed mainly in pegmatites and, much less frequently, in some contact-metamorphic rocks; In the latter case, it is associated with manganese minerals.
Place of Birth.
The main deposits are in the states of California and Virginia (USA) and Madagascar. The deposits of Mount Spessart in Germany, on which the mineral received its name, are currently underdeveloped. Spessartines, used in jewelry, are extracted from alluvial pebbles in Sri Lanka, Burma and Brazil.
Application.
Spessartine has only scientific and collector interest, except for stones from Sri Lanka, Burma and Brazil, which are used in jewelry.
