It occurs in the form of crusts, efflorescence and in the form of crystals, sometimes of impressive size. These are bipyramids, less often short prisms or tabular shaded crystals. Cruciform twins are also characteristic. The mineral is transparent or translucent, mostly colorless or light gray, yellowish, pinkish and brownish.
Origin.
Distributed in the deposits of salt lakes in association with mirabilite, glauberite, bledite, epsomite, gypsum, halite, soda (natron), sometimes borates. It is also found together with sodium nitrate in efflorescences formed in desert regions, and also in the form of crusts on modern lavas.
Deposits and applications.
The first samples of tenardite came from a place called Espartinas near Madrid, also found in Miocene sedimentary rocks in San Martín de la Vega. Other locations (all in the sediments of salt lakes) are in the USA (California, Arizona, Nevada), Canada, Siberia, Egypt, Sudan, Libyan Sahara, Central Asia, Chile. In Italy, the fumaroles of Vesuvius and Etna are noted on lavas and sediments. Used for the production of sodium salts.
