Wavellite is found in the form of disk-shaped or spherical aggregates of a fibrous-radiant structure. The individual crystals that form them very rarely have clearly defined facets; There are also stalactites. Coloring is quite diverse: white, light greenish-white, yellow, brown, blue, pale gray.
Diagnostic signs.
It dissolves in strong acids. When heated, it exfoliates and whitens. When heated in a glass vial, water is released.
Origin.
Wabellite is found as a secondary mineral, distributed in various alumina-bearing rocks that have undergone metamorphism, as well as in limonite and phosphate formations.
Deposits and applications.
Wavellite is quite common in a number of places in Bohemia (Czech Republic); In Montebera in France, where it is represented by radiant discoid aggregates of pale color. In Barnstaple in Devonshire (Great Britain), among clayey shales, where the wavellite is first established, it has a yellow or yellow-brown color. Large deposits are being developed to produce phosphate raw materials for fertilizers.
