Vulphenite - lead molybdate. The brilliance is diamond. Transparent to translucent. Colors: from wax-yellow to orange-red. The line is yellowish. The fracture is conchoidal, uneven. It's fragile. Cleavage is perfect. It is formed as a secondary mineral in the oxidation zones of lead ores. The crystals (tetragonal syngony) are pyramidal or tabular. An important ore of molybdenum. Deposits are found in Austria, Yugoslavia, the USA.
Vulfenite - Driza of lamellar crystals, China. (2011).
Vulfenite (thin yellow plates). Austria, the EU. (2011).
This molybdate of lead forms tabular or lamellar crystals - octahedral or pseudocubic. It is also present in the form of masses of granular or earthy aggregation or clusters of granules or plates. Color yellow, orange, red. Orange-yellow to wax-yellow; Also yellowish-gray, greyish-white, olive green, brown, reddish-brown, also orange to bright red, due to the presence of chromium. The chemical composition is variable. Singonia is a monoclinic, prismatic type of symmetry. Cleavage in {011} is clear, according to {001} and {013} is unclear.
Diagnostic signs.
Easily melts; Dissolves slowly in acids. It decomposes in HCl upon evaporation with liberation of lead chloride and molybdenum oxide; Dissolves in concentrated H2SO4 and alkalis; Decomposes in HNO4 with the liberation of molybdenum oxide.
Origin.
A secondary mineral formed in the oxidation zone of some lead deposits, in association with cerussite, vanadinite, pyromorphite, mimetite.
Deposits and applications.
Among the numerous deposits of wulfenite are especially famous for their gorgeous Crystal Red Cloud in Arizona, Mibladen and Jebel Mather in Morocco, Chihuahua in Mexico, M'fuati in the People's Republic of Congo, Bleiberg in Carinthia. Vulfenite is of industrial importance as molybdenum ore.
