Windows 2000: Windows 2000 (useful tips)
Disabling POSIX and OS2 subsystems in Windows 2000
POSIX is the standard for operating system interoperability, it is included in Windows 2000 at the request of the US government, and the OS2 subsystem is needed to run the appropriate applications. Ordinary users, it is unlikely, when these subsystems will be used, so it is better to remove them to free up unnecessary memory. Microsoft did not provide a legal way to delete these subsystems, so you should delete or rename the required files. Moreover, before uninstalling, you should either disable file protection (Windows File Protection), or delete files from the Winnt \ System32 \ dllcache directory, and ignore the subsequent system request to insert the disk with the distribution. You should delete or rename the following files from the Winnt \ System32 directory: OS2.exe, OS2SRV.exe, PSXSS.exe, OS2SS.exe, and POSIX.exe
Warning: the POSIX subsystem may be required for some programs from the Resource Kit, if you use it, then leave POSIX.
How to install Windows 9x and Windows 2000 on a computer
If you want to install Windows 9x and Windows 2000 on your computer, you must first install Windows 9x, and then run setup.exe from the Windows 2000 distribution and install to a different directory, or better to another partition, otherwise Outlook Express and Internet Explorer normally work in Windows 9x will not. After this, when you start the computer, you will see the operating system selection menu.
If installed in the reverse order, Windows 9x will overwrite the boot sector of Windows 2000 during the installation. However, this problem can be solved. Before installing Windows 9x, you need to install the following lines in the MSBATCH.INF file from the distribution (if there is no such file in your distribution, create it):
[Setup]
CleanBoot = 0
If the Windows 9x distribution is on a CD (as it usually happens), then copy (or create) MSBATCH.INF to the hard drive and edit there, then run the Windows 9x installer by specifying the full path to the file as the parameter, for example:
Setup.exe C: \ MSBATCH.INF
In this case, the file can be called anything, not just MSBATCH.INF.
After installation, you may need to register Windows 9x in the start menu of Windows 2000 by adding the following line to the [operating systems] section of the boot.ini file:
C: \ = "Microsoft Windows 98"
Where the text in quotation marks is what will be displayed in the OS selection boot menu.
At the root of the system disk, you need the bootsect.dos file, which contains the boot sector of Windows 9x. If this file is not created for some reason, then you have to go the other way.
1. Install Windows 9x in normal mode so that it overwrites the boot sector.
2. Save it (the first sector of the partition (512 bytes) on which Windows 9x was installed) to a file named bootsect.dos using Norton DiskEdit or, for example, the BOOTPART program.
3. Boot into the Windows 2000 installation program, choose where to repair the current installation using Recovery Console.
4. Restore the boot sector of Windows 2000 with the fixboot command.
5. Boot into Windows 2000 and register Windows 9x in the start menu in boot.ini
How to format one of the partitions without losing the ability to boot Windows 2000
If you want to format the first partition of the disk without losing the ability to boot Windows 2000 installed on another partition, you should proceed as follows. Before formatting, save the files from the root of the first partition that you need to boot Windows 2000:
Ntldr - bootloader;
Boot.ini - bootloader configuration file;
Ntdetect.com - collects information about devices;
Ntbootdd.sys - needed only with SCSI;
Bootfont.bin - font, only needed for a localized version;
Bootsect.dos - file with the boot sector of the alternative OS.
After formatting the partition, copy all these files back, boot into the Recovery Console of Windows 2000 and restore the boot sector of Windows 2000 with the fixboot command.
