Places of Detention

- Institutions in which persons serving sentences, sentenced to imprisonment.

By M. LS include correctional facilities:

1) general correctional colony of strict, special regime settlement colony. They are intended to serve the prison inmates who have reached the age of majority;

2) medical correctional institutions where convicts serve their sentences, suffering from open tuberculosis, alcoholism, drug addiction and other diseases;

3) educational colonies;

4) General and Strict Regime Prison, where men are serving sentences, sentenced to imprisonment for a period exceeding 5 years for the most serious crimes, and convicts who are malignant violators of the established penalty serving order transferred from ispravitelnyhkolony.

In detention centers and prisons can serve their imprisonment convicted, left there with their consent for the economic maintenance of the facilities.

In accordance with the Criminal Enforcement Code convicts serve their sentences within the territory of the RF subject, in which they resided or were convicted.

If the place of residence or conviction is not a correctional institution or the relevant type can not accommodate prisoners in correctional facilities available (eg, because of overcrowding), the convicts are sent to the nearest correctional facilities located on the territory of the RF subject.

However, in a number of subjects of the Russian Federation lacks all kinds of prisons. In these cases, convicted in consultation with the corresponding higher authorities of the correctional system can be directed to institutions located in other Russian regions.

In the course of serving the sentence and, depending on the behavior of convicted by a court decision can be changed view of the correctional institution (instead of prison -ispravitelnaya colony, instead of a general and strict regime colony - colony-settlement and vice versa).
