Tips for quick and accurate installation

Disable any installed antivirus software. If these utilities are run during the installation, the computer may hang.
NOTE . On some computers, antivirus tools are built into the BIOS. If you do not disable these tools in the BIOS / CMOS, you may receive messages about changes in the system such as "virus-like activity" or "Master Boot Record" during installation. For a successful installation, you must allow the necessary changes. For more information, see the antivirus software documentation.
Run ScanDisk to detect and fix any errors on the hard disk.
Close all running programs. You should also disable screensavers, automatic power management tools and other programs that may interfere with the normal installation. For more information, see "" Net "system boot".

General Installation Issues

Disk space required for installation
Since the amount of disk space required to install Windows Me depends on many factors, the following information is related to the normal Windows Me installation types.
A typical Windows 95 update: approximately 295 MB of free disk space is required, but depending on the computer's configuration, it may take up to 435 MB.
Full installation on a drive with FAT16 file system: 535 MB of free meta on the disk is required, this value can vary from 495 to 635 MB depending on the configuration of the computer and the components to be installed.
Full installation on a disk with FAT32 file system: 480 MB of free meta on the disk is required, this value can vary from 455 to 535 MB depending on the configuration of the computer and the components that are installed.
Also, if you install Windows Me not on drive C, you will need up to 25 MB of free space on drive C to create system files and the installation log.
Removal. If you want to back up a previous Windows system before upgrading, select the "Save System Files" check box. This will allow you to uninstall Windows Me in the event of a problem. However, this can not be done in the following cases.
- The installation was performed in a different folder or not as an update to the previous version.
CREATE A NEW DOWNLOAD DISK! Due to changes in the real and protected mode kernels to support the FAT32 file system, the Windows Me boot disk is not compatible with earlier versions of Windows. Therefore, the first time you install Windows Me, you need to create a new boot disk, EVEN IF FAT32 FILE SYSTEM USES IS NOT PLANNED.

Installing Windows Me from MS-DOS

If you install Windows Me on a blank or new hard disk, or if you experience a problem with the installation of the system from a previous version of Windows, run Windows Me Setup from MS-DOS. Although the installation from MS-DOS is usually the slowest, it is often the most secure, it should be used if other types of installations fail.
Download keys in MS-DOS mode
There are several ways to safely boot your computer in MS-DOS mode. The easiest way is to use the following keys:
- Windows 98 / Windows 98, second release Hold down the CTRL key when you start the computer. This is needed to exit to the Windows 98 startup menu (the F8 key also works, but the "Starting Windows 98" message is not displayed during boot, so it's difficult to determine when to press this key).
- Windows 95
After the "Starting Windows 95" message appears, press the F8 key. This is required to exit the Windows 95 boot menu.
- MS-DOS 6.x
After the message "Starting MS-DOS" appears, press the F8 key. Next, you can manually download or skip the download of drivers and system files.
- Real-mode CD-ROM drivers To access the Windows Me CD-ROM, you must download the real-mode CD-ROM drivers. If Windows Me already booted and a boot disk was created, the drivers on it can be used. If there is no bootable disc, run the installation program that came with the CD-ROM drive.
After accessing the CD-ROM drive, insert the Windows Me CD-ROM and enter the SETUP command. The installer starts.
Modifying the Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files
Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files specify the programs and devices that are launched when the computer boots (for example, in the Autoexec.bat file, an antivirus program can be specified that will be launched automatically). Some programs and devices interfere with the normal operation of the Windows Me Setup program. To remove such a program or such a device, you may need to modify the Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files.
To change the Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files in Windows 95.
1. Click Start, click Run, type "Sysedit," and then press ENTER.
2. In the Config.sys or Autoexec.bat file dialog box, type the REM statement at the beginning of the lines that you want to disable.
3. Save the changes and restart the computer.
To change the Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files in Windows 98.
1. Click Start, click Run, type "Sysedit," and then press ENTER.
2. Click the "Autoexec.bat" or "Config.sys" tab, and clear the check boxes next to the rows that you want to disable.
3. Click the "Apply" button, then click "OK" and restart the computer.
Tips for installing real-mode drivers for a CD-ROM drive
---------------------------------------
If the current operating system is Windows 95, some of the drivers for the CD-ROM drive may already be loaded. If you have access to the CD-ROM drive in MS-DOS mode, follow these steps.
1. Turn on the computer.
2. When the line "Starting Windows 95" is displayed on the screen,
Press the F8 key.
3. Select the value of "Command Prompt Only".
4. In the C: \ line, type DosStart.bat.
This will provide access to the CD drive.
If access to the CD-ROM drive stopped during the installation of Windows Me, try restarting the computer. After the restart, the program will either continue automatically, or it will have to be restarted manually and, if prompted, select "Safe Resume".
Installing Windows Me from a Hard Drive
-------------------------------------
By copying the installation files to the hard disk and performing the installation from the hard disk, you can prevent most of the problems associated with copying files and accessing the disks. If you use this type of installation, you can also unload the drivers of the CD-ROM drive and thus free up the main memory and prevent errors in the lower memory.
To copy the installation files to a local folder when installing on top of Windows 95.
1. Release an additional 120 MB of disk space in addition to that required for installation. Usually, to install Windows Me in Windows 95 upgrade mode requires 295 MB.
2. Create a temporary folder "W9xFlat", to which the installation files will be copied.
3. Copy the contents of the Win9x folder on the Windows Me CD to the temporary folder that you created. It is recommended that you also copy subfolders from the Win9x folder, but this is not necessary if there is not enough disk space.
4. Restart the computer. After the "Starting Windows 95" message, press the F8 key and select the "Safe Mode Command Prompt Only" mode.
5. Go to the temporary folder that contains the Windows Me installation files and enter the SETUP command.
To copy the installation files to a local folder when installing from MS-DOS.
1. Make sure the CD-ROM drive is accessible. For more information about this, see above.
2. Release an additional 120 MB of disk space in addition to that required for installation. Usually, to install Windows Me in MS-DOS update mode requires 295 MB.
3. Create a temporary folder "W9xFlat" on the disk, which has enough free space, to which the installation files will be copied. To create a temporary folder, go to the desired drive and enter the MD W9xFlat command.
4. Navigate to the Win9x folder on the Windows Me CD-ROM.
5. Copy the contents of the Win9x folder on the Windows Me CD-ROM to the temporary folder that you created. To do this, enter the command Copy *. * <Drive letter> \ W9xFlat.
6. After all the files have been copied, restart the computer and perform a clean boot without executing the boot files. For more information, see "Clean boot".
7. Go to the temporary folder that contains the Windows Me installation files and enter the SETUP command.

"Clean" system boot

Device drivers, service and other third-party programs may prevent successful installation. Performing a "clean" download will help solve most potential problems. The "clean" download is performed in the following ways.
Boot the computer from the floppy disk.
- Boot the computer from the Windows Me boot disk. This allows you to choose the boot options: with or without CD-ROM drive drivers. The system state after booting from this disk is a "clean" environment for running the setup program. - Boot the computer from the Windows 98 startup disk of the second release / 98/95 or MS-DOS. This will not provide access to the CD-ROM drive, but it will help if the installation files are copied as described above.
Download Windows 95 in Safe Mode Command Prompt Only. - Restart the computer and after the message "Starting Windows 95" appears, press the F8 key. - Select the "Safe Mode Command Prompt Only" boot mode. It also does not provide access to the CD-ROM drive, but it will help if copying the installation files is done as described above.
Step by step Windows 98 / Windows 98 Second Edition. If some drivers need to be manually downloaded, follow these steps: - Restart the computer and after the message "Starting Windows 95" appears, press the F8 key. - Select the "Step by Step" download mode. - Then answer "YES" only to requests to load the necessary drivers. In most cases, you should download the Himem.sys driver.

ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE

Make sure that no anti-virus programs are run during the installation of Windows Me. If such a program is resident, remove all references to it from the Autoexec.bat, Config.sys and Win.ini files.
If the virus protection is built into the BIOS, disable it before running the installer. To do this, use the CMOS setup program for the existing BIOS. For more information, see your computer documentation.
Below are some remarks about some antivirus programs.
Built-in CMOS / BIOS protection against viruses
-------------------------------------------------
In some computers, anti-virus tools are built into the BIOS. If you do not disable these tools, you may receive messages about changes in the system such as "Virus-like Activity" or "Master Boot Record Changed" during installation. You must allow the necessary changes. If you choose to restore the previous settings, the computer may stop loading.
Norton AntiVirus
----------------
If Norton AntiVirus is installed, the following warning may appear at the end of the initial procedure for copying files:
Application Wininst0.400 \ Suwin.exe is
Attempting to update the Master Boot Record
To successfully complete the installation, continue execution ("Continue", "C" key). If you do not allow the setup program to make these changes, it may hang.
Dr. Solomon's AntiVirus
-----------------------
If during the installation, the Dr.Web service is running. Solomon's AntiVirus, when you try to create a system disk, you may receive a message about an unrecoverable error in the Ios.vxd module on a blue background. When the system drive creation indicator reaches 20%, click the "Cancel" button. This will continue the installation. To solve this problem, try to find the Dr.Web software on the website. Solomon's AntiVirus update.

Finding errors on the hard disk using Scandisk during installation

The version of the Scandisk program that is running when you install Windows Me only finds errors. It does not correct them. If there are errors, the installation program will not be able to continue working until they are fixed.
To resolve these errors, exit Setup and run ScanDisk for Windows 95, Windows 98, or MS-DOS. The following is information about using ScanDisk to fix these errors.
Troubleshooting hard disk errors
----------------------------------
If during the installation you receive a message stating that you need to start the ScanDisk program to fix errors on the hard disk, perform the following steps.
If Windows Me is installed on top of MS-DOS.
1. If you are installing from a CD, insert it into the CD-ROM drive and enter the following line
X: \ win9x \ scandisk.exe / all
Where "x" is the drive letter into which the CD is inserted.
2. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen, and correct any errors detected by ScanDisk.
3. Run the installer again.
If Windows Me is installed on top of Windows 98 or Windows 95.
1. Exit the installation program.
2. Click the "Start" button, select "Programs", "Standard", "Utilities" from the menu and launch the ScanDisk program.
3. Check hard disks and all drive disks for errors and fix any errors found. Make sure that all disks are checked, otherwise the installer can continue to detect errors.
Problems with ScanDisk
-------------------------------------
In some cases, ScanDisk can not fix the error or causes it to occur.
If there is not enough memory or other problems when starting ScanDisk from the installation program, you can prevent ScanDisk from running by running the setup program with the / IS switch. To do this, enter the command
Setup / is
NOTE . It is not recommended to skip the start of the ScanDisk program during installation. Because of this, there may be errors on the hard disk that will lead to incorrect installation or operation of Windows Me.

Errors in .cab files during system installation

If you try to install Windows Me or its components from the Windows installation floppy disks or CD-ROMs, one of the following messages may be displayed.
- Error while unpacking: CAB file can not be unpacked. An attempt will be made to correct the error. Click OK.
- An error was encountered while unpacking and copying Windows files to your computer. To resolve this issue, boot from the rescue disk and run the installer again. If the error recurs, examine the Setup.txt file for a discussion of the problems with .cab files.
The following causes the occurrence of such errors.
- The Windows Me CD is damaged, dirty or scratched.
- The CD-ROM drive is not working properly. Perhaps the strong vibration of the CD does not allow you to read data from it.
- The rated frequency of the processor is increased. When unpacking .cab files, memory is heavily used. Exceeding the nominal processor frequency can lead to decoding errors. These errors can also occur on overheated computers.
- Operational or computer cache cards are damaged or incorrectly connected. For example, the use of EDO and non-EDO RAM cards or operating at different speeds is used. Even if Windows is operating normally, the additional load associated with unpacking files and accessing the disc can lead to decoding errors.
- In the BIOS and Device Manager, bus management or Ultra DMA functions are enabled. The data is transferred too quickly and the system does not have time to process it.
- The third-party memory manager is used.
- The computer is infected with a virus.
To troubleshoot these problems, try the following:
- Remove the CD from the drive, turn a quarter or half full turn, insert into the drive, and click "OK."
- Remove the CD-ROM from the drive. Wipe it with a piece of soft cloth, insert it into the drive and click "OK."
- Install the real-mode drivers for the CD-ROM drive. If you can not find the real mode drivers for your drive, try using the CD-ROM drive drivers that are available on the Windows Me boot disk. These drivers support most types of CD-ROM drives, including IDE and SCSI drives. Run Windows Setup from MS-DOS.
- Create an empty folder "W9xflat" on one of the hard disks. Copy the contents of the Win9x folder on the Windows Me CD into it.
setup /c
Она находится на загрузочном диске Windows Me и в папке \Oldmsdos на компакт-диске Windows Me.
ext
NOTE. Precopy2.cab.
