3.6. Choice of work design model

The foregoing shows that the choice of a model for designing a work is quite difficult. Those leaders who seek to improve both the quality of life at work and organizational effectiveness prefer the models of enrichment of work to the socio-technical model and organizational development. The same leaders, who are more concerned with production and its efficiency, concentrate on models of building work, expanding the scale of work and rotating work (Table 6.6).

Technology is an important variable in the design work. Some works simply can not be enriched without a radical reorganization of all operations. When the work can not be changed, other approaches (for example, the introduction of a flexible work schedule) that can mitigate "unenriched" work should be used. Also, new information technologies can be used for this purpose, especially those that facilitate the introduction of robots into production, eliminating tedious and routine work and thus the need for its redesign. Leaders should try to understand all of the above models of work design and use them individually or in combination in a way that is most appropriate for the organization, unit or work site.
