Spherophysin is an alkaloid isolated from the spherophysis plant, saline (Sphaerophysa salsula Pall. Dc.), Herewith. legumes (Leguminosae) growing in Central Asia, Siberia, Altai.
Available in benzoate (Sphaerophysini benzoas). 1-Guanidino-4- (isoamylene-1-yl-amino) -butane dibenzoate.
White crystalline powder; odorless, bitter taste. Easily soluble in water (1: 2), alcohol (1: 3, 5), solutions of caustic and carbonic alkalis. Aqueous solutions are sterilized at + 100 ° C for 30 minutes.
Spherophysin has ganglion-blocking activity (see Ganglioblokiruyuschie drugs). One of the features of the drug is its stimulating effect on the muscles of the uterus.
Spherophysin is used in obstetric-gynecologic practice for weak labor activity, bleeding in the postpartum period and uterine atony as a means of accelerating the reverse development of the uterus and contributing to the cessation of bleeding. It can be used in women with hypertension and atherosclerosis, when pituitrin is contraindicated.
To stimulate labor, injected under the skin or intramuscularly in 1 ml of 1% solution again after 1 h; only 6 injections. Inside appoint 0.03 g again after 2 hours.
In connection with the antihypertensive effect, spherophysin is sometimes used to reduce blood pressure in hypertensive diseases of stage I and stage II.
