Deuteronomy 19

Previous chapter Index Next chapter
1 When the Lord your God will destroy the nations whom the Lord your God gives you the land and you will inherit after them, and you will dwell in their cities and their houses,
2 then you will separate three cities in the midst of your land, which the Lord your God gives you into possession;
3 make your way and divide into three parts all your land, which the Lord your God gives you as an inheritance; they will serve as a refuge for every killer.
4 And here is a killer who can run away and stay alive: whoever kills his neighbor without intention, without being an enemy to him yesterday and the third day;
5 whoever goes with his neighbor into the forest to chop wood, and his hand swings with an ax to cut down a tree, and the iron jumps off the ax and falls into the neighbor, and he dies - let him flee to one of those cities to stay alive,
6 so that the avenger for blood, in the fervor of his heart, does not chase after the murderer and does not overtake him if the way is far, and does not kill him, while he is not [to be] sentenced to death, for he was not his enemy yesterday and the third day;
7 therefore, I gave you a command, saying: Separate three cities for yourself.
eight When the Lord your God has spread your limits, as He swore to your fathers, and will give you all the land that He promised to give to your fathers,
nine if you try to fulfill all these commandments that I command you today, to love the Lord your God and to walk in His ways all the days, then add three more cities to these three cities,
ten lest the blood of the innocent be shed in the midst of your land, which the Lord your God gives you as an inheritance, and that there be no blood [guilt] on you.
eleven But if anyone is an enemy of his neighbor and lies in wait for him, and arises against him and kills him to death, and flees to one of those cities,
12 then the elders of the city must send him to take him from there and deliver him into the hands of the avenger for blood, so that he dies;
13 Thy thy eye not spare; wash away the blood of the innocent from Israel, and you will be well.

fourteen Do not break the border of your neighbor, which was laid by your ancestors in your inheritance that has been delivered to you in the land that the Lord your God gives you into possession.
fifteen It is not enough one witness against someone in some guilt and in some crime and in some sin with which he sinned: at the words of two witnesses, or at the words of three witnesses, a case will be held.
16 If an unjust witness speaks against whom, accusing him of a crime,
17 then let both of these men appear, who have a lawsuit, before the Lord, before the priests and before the judges who will be in those days;
18 the judges should investigate well, and if the witness that witness is false, falsely reported to his brother,
19 then do to him what he intended to do to his brother; and [so] consume evil from among you;
20 and others will hear and be afraid, and will not continue to do such evil among you;
21 Thy [his] eye will not spare: soul for soul, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.
