Deuteronomy 29

Previous chapter Index Next chapter
one These are the words of the covenant that the Lord commanded Moses to make with the sons of Israel in the land of Moab, except for the covenant that the Lord made with them at Horeb.
2 And Moses called all [the sons] of Israel and said to them: you saw everything that the Lord did before your eyes in the land of Egypt with Pharaoh and all his servants and all his land;
3 those great executions that your eyes saw, and those great signs and wonders;
4 but to this day the Lord has not given you a heart to understand, eyes to see, and ears to hear.
5 Forty years I drove you through the wilderness, and your clothes did not decay on you, and your shoes did not decay on your foot;
6 you didn’t eat bread, and you didn’t drink wine or strong drink, so that you know that I am the Lord your God.
7 And when you came to this place, Sihon king of Heshbon and Og king of Bashan came out against us to fight [with us], and we smote them;
eight and they took their land and gave it to the inheritance of [the tribe] of Reuben and Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh.
nine Keep the words of this covenant and fulfill them, so that you may be successful in everything you do.

ten All of you today stand before the Lord your God, the rulers of your tribes, your elders, your overseers, all Israel,
eleven your children, your wives and your aliens who are in your camp, from the one who cuts your wood to the one who draws your water,
12 in order to enter into the covenant of the Lord your God and the oath agreement with him that the Lord your God makes with you today,
thirteen in order to make you His people today, and He to be God to you, as He told you and how he swore to your fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
fourteen It’s not with you alone that I make this covenant and this oath,
fifteen but as with those who are here today with us before the face of the Lord our God, and with those who are not here with us today.
sixteen For you know how we lived in the land of Egypt and how we passed in the midst of the nations through which you passed,
17 and they saw their abominations and their idols, wooden and stone, silver and gold, which they have.
18 May there not be between you a man or woman, or a clan or tribe, whom the heart now deviates from the Lord our God, to walk to serve the gods of those nations; May there be no root between you that grows poison and wormwood,
19 a man who, having heard the words of this curse, would boast in his heart, saying: “I will be happy, despite the fact that I will walk according to the arbitrariness of my heart”; and thus fed up hungry;
twenty the Lord will not forgive such a person, but immediately the Lord’s wrath and fury will be kindled against such a person, and the whole curse [of this covenant] written in this book will fall on him, and the Lord will blot out his name from under heaven;
21 and the Lord will separate him for destruction from all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant written in this book of the law.
22 And the next generation will say, your children who will be after you, and a stranger who comes from a distant land, having seen the defeat of this land and the disease by which the Lord will wear out:
23 sulfur and salt, conflagration - the whole earth; it does not sow and grow, and no grass comes out on it, as after the extermination of Sodom, Gomorrah, Adma and Sebohim, which the Lord overthrew in His wrath and in His fury.
24 And all the nations will say: Why did the Lord do this with this earth? what a great fury of his wrath!
25 And they will say: because they left the covenant of the Lord God of their fathers, which He made with them when He brought them out of the land of Egypt,
26 and they went and began to serve other gods and worship them, gods whom they did not know and [whom] He did not appoint them:
27 [for this] the anger of the Lord was kindled on this earth, and He cast upon it all the curses [covenants] written in this book;
28 and the Lord cast them out of their land in wrath, rage and great indignation, and cast them to another earth, as it is now [see].
29th The hidden [belongs to] the Lord our God, and the open - to us and our sons until the age that we fulfill all the words of this law.
