Exodus 3

Previous chapter Index Next chapter
1 Moses grazed the sheep of Jethro, his father-in-law, the priest of Midian. Once he led a herd far into the desert and came to the mountain of God, Horeb.
2 And the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst of a thorn bush. And he saw that the thorn bush burns with fire, but the bush does not burn.
3 Moses said: I’ll go and look at this great phenomenon, why the bush does not burn.
4 The Lord saw that he was going to look, and God called to him from among the bush, and said: Moses! Moses! He said: here I am!
5 And God said: Do not come here; take off your shoes from your feet, for the place on which you stand is holy ground.
6 And he said: I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. Moses covered his face because he was afraid to look at God.

7 And the Lord said: I saw the suffering of my people in Egypt, and I heard his cry from his keepers; I know his grief
eight and I go to deliver him from the hand of the Egyptians and bring him out of this land into a good and vast land, where milk and honey flow, into the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Ferezeyev, Eveev and Jebusites.
nine And now, the cry of the sons of Israel has already reached Me, and I see the oppression with which the Egyptians oppressed them.
ten So go: I will send you to Pharaoh; and lead My people, the sons of Israel, out of Egypt.

eleven Moses said to God: who am I to go to Pharaoh and bring the sons of Israel out of Egypt?
12 And [God] said: I will be with you, and here is a sign to you that I sent you: when you bring the people out of Egypt, you will serve God on this mountain.
13 And Moses said to God: Behold, I will come to the sons of Israel and tell them: God of your fathers has sent me to you. And they will tell me: what is his name? What to tell me?
fourteen God said to Moses: I am Jehovah. And he said: say so unto the sons of Israel: Jehovah Jehovah sent me unto you.
fifteen And God also said to Moses: say so to the sons of Israel: the Lord, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob sent me to you. This is My name forever, and the remembrance of Me from generation to generation.

16 Go, gather the elders of Israel and say to them: The Lord, the God of your fathers, appeared to me, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and said: I visited you and [saw] what was being done to you in Egypt.
17 And he said: I will lead you out of the oppression of Egypt into the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Ferezeyev, Eveev and Jebusites, into the land where milk and honey flow.
18 And they listen to your voice, and you and the elders of Israel go to the king of Egypt, and say to him: The Lord, the God of the Jews, called us; so let us go into the wilderness, for three days' journey, to offer a sacrifice to the Lord our God.
19 But I know that the king of Egypt will not allow you to go unless you [force him] with your strong hand;
20 and I will stretch out My hand, and smite Egypt with all My wonders, which I will do in his midst; and after that he will let you go.
21 And I will give this people mercy in the eyes of the Egyptians; and when you go, you go not empty-handed:
22 each woman will beg silver from her neighbor and from her living in her house silver things and gold things, and clothes, and you will dress them with your sons and your daughters, and will wrap the Egyptians.
