prescribed for constipation, before surgery, x-ray examination of the abdominal cavity and small pelvis, ultrasound examination of the same organs, before the use of medicinal and nutritional enemas. For chronic constipation, enemas should not be used frequently. the patient becomes accustomed to emptying the bowel only by artificial means.
For a cleansing enema, 1-2 liters of water heated to a temperature of 25-35 ± C are necessary; with constipation caused by spasm of the intestine, hot enemas are more effective (temperature 37-42 ± C), and for constipation caused by a decrease in the tone of the intestine - cold (temperature 12-20 ± C). It is possible to enhance the action of an enema by dissolving 1 tablespoon of baby soap or 2-3 tablespoons of vegetable oil or glycerin before the formation of foam. The enema from decoction of dry chamomile is also effective (1 tablespoon per 1 cup of water).
In Esmarkh's mug, water or solution is poured, the rubber tube is filled in, displacing the air, and the valve is closed on the tube.
The patient lies on his left side, bending the legs at the knees and leading them to the stomach. Under it lay an oilcloth. The end of which is dipped in a basin or bucket in case it can not hold water. If the enema can be put only in the position of the patient on the back, use a bedpan. The tip is smeared with petroleum jelly with a rotational movement and is gently inserted into the rectum first towards the navel (3-4 cm), then, having felt an obstacle, the tip is directed towards the spine and inserted into the intestinal lumen to a depth of 10-12 cm. After that, the valve is opened and the mug is gradually raised to a height of 1 m. When a feeling of a strong urge to defecate appears in a patient, the faucet is closed and the tip is removed from the rectum, with one hand previously sliding the buttocks together and asking the patient to hold the water. After removing the tip, it should hold water for 5-10 minutes, after which it will empty the intestines.
