“Due to the nature of the female body and, in some cases, a barbaric attitude to their own health, most women don’t get any amount of iron that comes close to normal,” writes Annette Natow, Ph.D., professor emeritus at Adelphian University in Garden City, New York , and a graduate in diet therapy from The Valley Stream Nutrition Counseling Center. If a woman, for example, adheres to a diet containing 1000 calories per day, she is likely to receive only 6 mg of iron, negligible compared to the recommended 15 milligrams. Even if a woman consumes 2,000 calories per day, which is usually much more than what a woman taking care of her figure allows herself, she receives on average only about 12 milligrams of iron. ”
Add to this that if you consume iron-poor foods such as cottage cheese, yogurt, lettuce, fruit juices, which make up a large part of your daily diet, the likelihood of iron deficiency anemia is even greater.
Experts say that even slight anemia is a symptom of overwhelming iron deficiency anemia, as blood cells do not immediately respond to iron loss by the body. When this happens, your doctor will advise you to take a six-month course of treatment with iron preparations. You will also need to periodically check your hemoglobin levels. If increased iron supplementation does not increase hemoglobin, your doctor will check for other causes of the disease.
“Since you absorb only a third of the iron in the preparations,” says Dr. McClure, you will need to take them for a long time, despite the fact that usually after a month or two you feel much better.
